How to Choose a Self-Directed IRA Custodian for Precious Metals (2026)
Choosing a self-directed IRA custodian for precious metals means choosing the institution that administers your retirement account—not simply choosing the company that sells you gold. Start with the custodian's legal qualifications, then compare its written fee schedule, storage arrangements, service standards and exit procedures. A familiar dealer name or a promotional fee waiver does not answer those questions.
This is a custodian-selection guide, not another ranking of metals dealers. If you are still learning how the account works, start with our Gold IRA investment overview. If you are comparing companies that sell and coordinate metals purchases, use our Gold IRA company comparison. Here, the focus is who administers the IRA and what you should verify before signing.
Dealer, Custodian and Depository: Know Which Company Does What
The precious-metals dealer
The dealer sells the coins or bars, quotes the purchase price and spread, and may help coordinate a transfer or rollover. Goldco, Augusta Precious Metals and Birch Gold Group are metals providers, not the IRA custodians you should be evaluating under this guide. Ask each provider which legal entity will administer your particular account; partnerships and available arrangements can change.
The IRA custodian
The custodian administers the IRA under its account agreement, processes your investment directions, maintains records and handles applicable reporting. A directed custodian generally does not recommend investments or independently validate every seller's claims. The SEC and NASAA investor alert on self-directed IRAs warns that investors should not mistake account custody for a judgment that an investment or promoter is legitimate.
The metals depository
The depository provides the physical storage service under the custody arrangement. Its name, location, storage terms and insurance should be documented. A dealer's office address is not proof of where your IRA metal will be held. Our Gold IRA storage guide covers storage terminology in more depth.
Step 1: Verify the Custodian's Legal Identity and Qualifications
Get the full legal name on the custodial agreement, not just a brand name, referral company's name or sales representative's email signature. Ask the institution to identify the legal basis on which it acts as an IRA trustee or custodian and the regulator or approval that applies.
The IRS maintains an approved nonbank trustees and custodians list. It is a useful verification tool for entities operating under that approval, but it is not a complete directory of every eligible bank or trust institution. If the institution relies on bank or trust-company status instead, request the relevant charter and oversight information and verify it with the named regulator. Absence from the nonbank list alone does not settle eligibility.
Approval to administer an IRA is not IRS endorsement of an investment, dealer, fee level or expected return. Likewise, a good customer-review score is not a substitute for legal qualification. Resolve any mismatch between the agreement, website and regulatory record before transferring money.
The IRS IRA investment FAQ explains that qualifying bullion must be in the physical possession of a bank or IRS-approved nonbank trustee, including when an IRA-owned LLC buys it. Ask how the proposed custody and depository arrangement satisfies those rules. Do not accept a promise that ordinary personal home storage is a tax-free workaround; see our home-storage Gold IRA explanation.
Step 2: Compare Actual Precious-Metals IRA Custodians
The following institutions publish information about administering physical precious-metals IRAs. These are examples to research, not a ranked shortlist or a certification of current regulatory standing. We reviewed their public materials and fee resources on October 7, 2026; we have not tested their service or negotiated personalized quotes.
| Custodian | What its official materials describe | What to confirm for your account |
|---|---|---|
| Equity Trust Company | Self-directed IRA administration, including physical precious metals. Its fee page distinguishes Universal IRA, legacy retail and institutional schedules. | Which schedule applies to your metals account, whether storage is billed separately, and whether a dealer arrangement changes the terms. See its metals FAQ and official fee resources. |
| STRATA Trust Company | A dedicated Precious Metals Tier and a separate Flex Tier for a wider mix of assets, with storage fees listed separately. | Whether your planned holdings qualify for the metals tier, which depository and storage option are available, and all processing charges. See its official fee schedule. |
| GoldStar Trust Company | Precious-metals IRA administration, dealer-directed purchase procedures and named third-party depository options. | Which depository your purchase will use, segregation availability for your particular metals, and value-dependent storage charges. See its metals account information and official fee schedule. |
Do not choose solely because a dealer already works with one of these institutions. Ask whether you can use a different qualified custodian, what paperwork that would require, and whether the dealer's quoted price or promotion depends on a specific arrangement. There is no universally best custodian for every account size, metal mix and service need.
Step 3: Compare the Total Cost, Not Just the Administration Fee
Request two separate documents: the custodian's complete fee schedule and the dealer's written purchase quote. Custody and storage charges are not the same as the dealer's markup above the metal's market price. Our Gold IRA hidden-fee guide explains that wider cost picture.
Published examples—not personalized quotes: On the schedules checked for this guide, STRATA's Precious Metals Tier lists a $150 annual IRA fee plus $115 commingled storage or $175 segregated storage. GoldStar's schedule lists a $90 annual precious-metals maintenance fee plus $125 commingled storage, or a $225 minimum for segregated storage that can increase with metals value. Segregated options have metal- and depository-specific restrictions; do not assume every silver product qualifies.
Those base annual combinations are $265 or $325 for the STRATA examples and $215 or at least $315 for the GoldStar examples. They exclude setup, transaction, wire, shipping, termination and dealer charges. They do not prove that one institution is the cheapest for your account. Equity Trust publishes multiple schedules; request the schedule applicable to your specific account rather than treating an unrelated account tier as your metals quote. Fees and negotiated arrangements can change.
- Opening and funding: Application or establishment charges, incoming wires, expedited handling and any old-custodian outgoing fee.
- Ongoing administration: Flat annual fees versus balance- or asset-dependent fees, billing dates, minimum charges and whether fees are prorated.
- Storage: Separate or bundled billing, commingled versus segregated terms, value-based increases and eligible metals.
- Transactions and distributions: Purchases, sales, wires, checks, in-kind delivery, shipping and insurance.
- Leaving: Partial transfers, full termination, re-registration, depository changes and any promotion clawback.
If a provider advertises waived fees, ask who pays them, exactly which charges are covered, how long the offer lasts and what happens if you transfer or close the account early. A waiver of custodian and storage fees is not necessarily a waiver of the metals spread or every other charge.
Compare costs over your likely holding period. For illustration only, a $50 setup fee plus $265 per year costs $1,375 over five years before transactions, dealer pricing or changes in fees. Request the same five-year calculation from each candidate using your intended holdings and storage option.
Step 4: Verify Storage, Ownership Records and Insurance
Ask for the depository's legal name, location and storage agreement. Then ask how the metal is identified as an asset of your IRA. “Allocated,” “commingled” and “segregated” are not interchangeable guarantees: your actual ownership rights, recordkeeping and delivery entitlement depend on the contract.
- Are specific bars or coins identified, or do records show a quantity and type within a shared storage arrangement?
- If you request an eligible in-kind distribution, will you receive the same items or equivalent items of the stated type and quantity?
- Who reconciles the depository's holdings with the custodian's account records, and what audit information is available?
- What insurance covers theft, loss or damage, and what limits, exclusions and deductibles apply? Who can make a claim?
- What happens to custody and access if the dealer, custodian or storage provider stops operating?
Physical precious metals are not FDIC-insured bank deposits. Storage insurance is different from deposit insurance, and neither protects you against falling metal prices. Ask separately how uninvested IRA cash is held and what, if any, deposit insurance applies to that cash arrangement. For a detailed failure scenario, read what happens if your Gold IRA custodian goes out of business.
Step 5: Test Service, Reporting and Exit Procedures
Before opening an account, contact the custodian directly with a specific administrative question. Ask which team handles precious metals, how to escalate a delayed request, what transaction status you can see online and how to correct a statement error. Obtain expected processing times without treating estimates as guarantees.
Ask how fair-market-value information is produced, how fees are collected, and how applicable reporting and distributions are handled. Your account statement's metal value is not necessarily the amount a dealer would pay you in a sale. If required minimum distributions apply, confirm both the process and the lead time for cash or permitted in-kind delivery; our Gold IRA RMD guide covers the planning issues.
For an existing metals IRA, ask both custodians whether holdings can transfer in kind, whether a depository change is required and which transfer or shipping charges apply. Do not assume switching administrators requires selling all your metal, or that every receiving custodian accepts your current products.
Where available and appropriate, a direct trustee-to-trustee transfer between IRAs of the same tax type can avoid taking personal possession of the money. A Roth conversion, inherited IRA or required distribution introduces separate rules; a change of custodian does not erase them. Coordinate with the receiving custodian and a qualified tax professional before giving transfer instructions. See our IRA-to-Gold-IRA transfer guide for the funding distinction.
A Custodian-Selection Checklist to Use Before You Sign
Ask each candidate to answer these questions in writing. A clear, complete answer is more useful than a sales promise.
- What is the full legal name of my IRA custodian, and how can I independently verify its qualification and oversight?
- Does it accept my proposed account type and the exact coins or bars I intend to hold?
- Which fee schedule applies, and what is the estimated first-year and five-year cost?
- Which charges are waived, who funds the waiver, and what conditions end it?
- Which depository, storage type and ownership records will apply to my metal?
- What insurance documentation can I review, and what does it exclude?
- How will I view holdings, transaction status, valuations and statements?
- Who handles distributions and service escalations, and what lead times should I plan for?
- Can I change dealers or transfer my metal in kind to another custodian?
- What fees and contractual steps apply if I leave?
Pause if the legal custodian is unnamed, fee details are withheld until after funding, a seller claims the IRS guarantees the investment, or you are pressured into a home-storage workaround. A custodian accepting an investment direction does not mean it has verified the dealer's pricing or promised its returns.
Frequently Asked Questions About Precious-Metals IRA Custodians
Is a Gold IRA company the same as an IRA custodian?
No. A metals provider sells the assets and may coordinate account setup. The qualified trustee or custodian administers the IRA, and the depository provides storage under that arrangement. Identify each legal entity separately in your paperwork.
Must every custodian appear on the IRS nonbank trustee list?
No. That list concerns approved nonbank trustees and custodians. An institution relying on qualifying bank or trust-company status may have a different legal basis. Ask it to document its qualification and verify the relevant approval or oversight; do not use a name match or absence from one list as your only check.
Does a custodian protect me from a bad investment?
Not simply by administering the IRA. Directed custodians generally do not give investment advice or validate every investment promoter. Review the dealer, purchase pricing, liquidity and risks independently, as well as the custody arrangements.
Can I choose my own custodian and depository?
Ask before committing. A dealer may work with a limited set of custodians, and a custodian may accept only certain storage providers and products. A different combination can affect fees, processing and promotions; obtain approval from the actual institutions rather than assuming unrestricted choice.
Can I change custodians without selling the metal?
Sometimes. Both institutions must support the transfer and the receiving custodian must accept the assets and storage arrangement. Confirm whether an in-kind transfer is available, what records are required and whether shipping, re-registration or termination charges apply.
Your Next Step: Request Comparable Written Proposals
Shortlist custodians that meet your legal, asset and storage requirements. Send each the same account type, estimated balance, intended metals and desired storage option, then compare their written answers to the checklist. Only after that should you evaluate a dealer's pricing and service alongside the custody arrangement. Our Gold IRA provider rankings address that separate decision; they do not rank IRA custodians.
